Five women. Five executions. The stories history tried to silence.

Step inside the haunting world of In Her Words: Stories of the Executed Women of Victoria, a historical true crime experience created for Melbourne Fringe by historian, author and podcast host Deb Robinson.

Blending storytelling and archival research, this special presentation explores the lives and deaths of the five women executed in Victoria between 1863 and 1951.

From the Devils River murder that led to the execution of Elizabeth Scott… to the final woman hanged in Australia, Jean Lee… these are stories of crime, punishment, poverty, survival and public judgement.

Far more than just a retelling of infamous crimes, In Her Words examines the social conditions surrounding these women’s lives — including coercive control, domestic violence, generational trauma, motherhood, mental illness and the impossible expectations placed upon women in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Presented with empathy and historical accuracy In Her Words asks difficult questions about justice, memory and the ways society chooses who deserves compassion… and who does not
